UNDATED (WPRI) - Red Sox prospect and Rhode Island native Ryan Westmoreland needs brain surgery.
The 19-year-old minor leaguer has been diagnosed with a cavernous malformation, but doctors say it isn't cancer.
If treated, doctors say, this type of brain malformation is not life threatening.
Westmoreland will undergo the procedure on Tuesday in Arizona.
Westmoreland is from Portsmouth and was drafted by the Red Sox last year. He has now taken a medical leave from Red Sox minor league camp.
He was diagnosed at Massachusetts General Hospital on March 5, a day after he left camp in Florida.
