Former Warwick superintendent dies

Robert J. Shapiro was 81 years old

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI)- Warwick city and school officials announced the death of former school superintendent Robert J. Shapiro Thursday morning.

According to our news partners at the Providence Journa l, Shapiro died Wednesday night.

Shapiro started as a history teacher in the district in 1957 and became superintendent about 12 years before his retirement in 2007.

Mayor Scott Avedisian has ordered all city flags lowered. Warwick schools will hold a moment of silence Friday in his memory.
