Drug suspect arrested after week on the run

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Police in Cranston have announced the arrest of drug suspect Jeffrey Batres.

Batres was stopped for speeding on Elmwood Avenue in Cranston on August 24.

According to police, a search of the vehicle uncovered a red back pack that smelled like marijuana.

Investigators say Batres told them he was going to a home on Perkins Avenue.

A news released issued Tuesday said Batres became nervous, and told investigators he was "willing to allow a search of his mother's address in Providence where he admitted officers would find small amounts of marijuana." But the officer felt that was "an obvious attempt to distract his attention from the Perkins Avenue address in Cranston where Bartes was headed at the time he was stopped."

Batres was released without being charged.

Cranston Police immediately obtained a search warrant for the Perkins Avenue home Batres had referenced.

It was searched at approximately 7pm on August 24.

According to investigations, 203 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $500,000 was found.

Cocaine and illegal prescription pills were also seized.

After a weeklong search, Batres was finally captured Tuesday at a motel in Seekonk.

According to Police, Batres has already waived extradition back to Rhode Island.

He is being held pending arraignment on Wednesday.
