WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) -- More than two years after the historic floods that wreaked so much damage over many areas of Rhode Island, the town of West Warwick is still repairing public property.
On Factory Street, next to the Riverwalk that goes over the Pawtuxet, part of a monumental retaining wall was washed away in the 2010 historic floods. It's now being rebuilt.
Officials told Eyewitness News the rebuilding of the retaining wall and monument started two months ago, and their plan is to be finished by October.
Funding was provided by FEMA, and is the last FEMA project to repair associated with the historic floods. A company in Scituate won the bid for the repair project, at just over $200,000.
Since the property is considered historic, the rebuilding project is using all of the old stone that was previously in the monument. The original monumental retaining wall was built more than a hundred years ago.
