WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) - Two suspects charged in a deadly hit and run in West Warwick were arraigned in Kent County Superior Court Friday afternoon.
Justin Schoonmaker is charged with murder, and Christopher Schreffler is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and second degree murder following an incident that happened just shy of one year ago.
Police say that 56-year-old Michael Parish was run over by a Jeep that Justin Schoonmaker was driving. Earlier in the day, Parish and Christopher Schreffler exchanged words over a noisy dirt bike that Schreffler was driving outside of Parish's home. Scheffler left, but returned to the scene with friends.
When Schreffler returned, police say he had a flashlight and was looking for a fight and neighbors stepped in, gathering around the vehicle. That’s when police say Schoonmaker slowly backed into the crowd before quickly going in reverse and running over Parish. Then he allegedly put the car in drive, running over the victim a second time.
Michael Parish died a short time later at Kent County hospital from his injuries.
Both men are due back in court on February 14th.
