WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) - Police in Warwick are searching for suspects after a local man was attacked with an ax. It happened Tuesday afternoon during an apparent road rage incident on Strawberry Field Road, investigators said.
Police believe the victim, Joe Gallagher, was attacked because he was driving too slow. His attackers reportedly struck Gallagher in the head, leg and thigh and then took off.
Gallagher, who's the father of three young children, called 911 and then drove to his home on Sheppard Drive, where he went to his neighbors for help.
"He said he got an axe, he said he got an axe in the head," said neighbor Douglas Fletcher. "We laid him down, he got towels and put pressure on his head."
Gallagher was rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police say the attackers were driving a red 2000 Hyundai Elantra with Rhode Island tag HJ 396.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
