WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island State Police say a 22-year-old Massachusetts woman was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after driving the wrong way on Route 4.

Police say Maryanne Speicher of North Attleborough was headed north in the southbound lane of the highway as it approaches Interstate 95 in Warwick around 2:20 a.m. Thursday. Troopers stopped her before she hit oncoming traffic.

Police say she smelled of alcohol and her speech was slurred. They took her to the North Kingstown barracks but she was incoherent and lost consciousness.

She was taken to Kent Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman could not immediately be reached.

Police said they did not know Speicher's blood-alcohol content level. They say she also faces a reckless driving charge.
