RI man hurt, 3 dead in wrong-way crash

OLD LYME, Conn. (WPRI) -- Three women were killed Tuesday night when a man from Warwick crashed into their car while driving the wrong way on I-95.

The collision happened shortly after 9 p.m. near Exit 70 in Old Lyme, Conn., shutting down the highway. It was reopened at about 3 a.m. Wednesday.

"It was chaotic, it was a massive impact of the front end of both vehicles," said Lt. Paul Vance of the Conn. State Police.

According to Connecticut State Police, Frank Sundstrom, 51, of 89 Nausauket Rd., Warwick, RI, was seriously injured in the crash and flown by helicopter to St. Raphael's Hospital. At last check, he remained in critical condition.

The three Connecticut women in the other car - Tamara Nolin, 71, Marjorie Minore, 90, and Minore's daughter Barbara Prato, 63 - were all killed in the crash.

Police said Sundstrom was headed north in the southbound lane when his car collided, almost head-on, with the car driven by Nolin.

According to WTNH.com , calls reporting a wrong-way driver began coming in to 911 shortly after 9 p.m. and within minutes, reports of the crash began to flood in.

Police are still investigating why Sundstrom was driving in the wrong direction.

"We will examine the vehicles, we'll determine if there was any vehicle failure, any medical conditions, any alcohol, any drugs," Vance added.

We're told that no charges have been brought against Sundstrom thus far.
