Two local towns get firefighter grants

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) -- The cities of Warwick and Cranston are getting nearly $1.3 million in new federal funding to train firefighters and upgrade equipment.

Warwick is receiving close to $742,000 to buy six automated external defibrillators to help respond to cardiac arrest patients and to train firefighters in advanced life support.

Cranston is getting about $522,000 to implement a computer aided dispatch system and to replace and upgrade the department's firefighter breathing apparatus.

The Assistance to Firefighter Grants are funded through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The grants were announced by U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, U.S. Rep. Jim Langevin , Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian and Cranston Mayor Allan Fung.
