CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - A national atheist group has increased its' support for the student at the center of the Cranston prayer banner controversy.
The "American Humanist Association" has raised more than $40,000 in scholarship money for Jessica Ahlquist. It says she stood up against her critics "with class and style."
Ahlquist won her battle against the Cranston School Department last month when a federal judge ordered the prayer banner be taken down.
The city has decided not to appeal the ruling.
Blogger Hemant Mehta started a campaign at the Friendly Atheist website to raise money for Ahlquist.
The Friendly Atheist says the fund has brought in more than $40,000. The fundraiser runs through the end of February.
