Man accused of sexually assaulting disabled woman

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) -- A Coventry man has been accused of raping a developmentally disabled woman back in July.

Derek Wilson, 41, was indicted for first-degree sexual assault last Wednesday.

The Attorney General's office tells us the alleged incident happened at the Patterson Building in Warwick, a satellite building of the Trudeau Center, for whom Wilson worked as a truck driver.

The president of the center, which cares for those with disabilities, says he was alerted of the crime in August.

"The woman who made the accusation reported it to her group home supervisory people, and an investigation pursued," said Donald Armstrong.

Armstrong sent out a letter to faculty, staff, and families of those at the center explaining briefly what happened.

Wilson has worked at the center for three years, and is now suspended. The center tells us they carefully scrutinize every employee before they're hired.

"Before he was employed we performed a background check investigation, and his background was fine," added Armstrong.

Wilson was arraigned and ordered held without bail. He's due back in court Wednesday.
