NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - A heavily-traveled area for tourists is going to get safer soon.
America's Cup Avenue in Newport is getting a pedestrian crosswalk with lighted walk signals at the intersection with Thames Street -- which is near a big shopping area for the City by the Sea.
Rep. Peter Martin, D-Newport, made the request for a crosswalk and walk signals to the State Traffic Commission, which has now approved the crosswalk work, according to State House officials.
RIDOT expects the work to be finished by spring 2013.
