WARWICK, R.I. (AP) -- Work has begun on a memorial in Warwick to honor the 100 people killed in a 2003 nightclub fire.

Public officials, religious leaders and a relative of one victim on Wednesday broke ground for the memorial. It's scheduled to be dedicated on Oct. 20, four months before the 10th anniversary of the fire at The Station nightclub in West Warwick.

The Warwick memorial has concerned some victims' families, who fear attention will be diverted from efforts to build a memorial at the fire site.

The site's owner has turned down offers to buy the land or requests to donate it.

Jody King, whose brother, Tracy, was killed in the fire, says the Warwick memorial will serve as an alternative place for people to reflect away from the fire site.
