New owners renovating Jigger's Diner

EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) -- After closing, reopening, and closing again, a staple of East Greenwich will soon be back in business.

New owners are currently renovating and making improvements to Jigger's Diner, but are doing everything they can to keep its rich history in tact.

Jigger's has been a Main Street icon throughout East Greenwich's history, and residents are more than happy to see it back in business.

Karrie Head and her husband, Stephen, bought the famed domed diner after it had been closed for an entire year.

"When this was a foreclosure, we saw it and we came in and we fell in love with it," she said.

The establishment started as a lunch cart in 1917, and took shape into the building you see today in 1955.

The diner may need some tough love, though the couple is sure to keep the front door open while they're hard at work. They say dozens of people poke their head in every day to share their stories of time spent at the eatery.

"They all smile and they all glow and they want to come in and get that atmosphere back, and we just want to fit in and do that as best we can," said Stephen.

The owners say it should only be about three or four more weeks until Jigger's Diner is back open for business.
