CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training announced on Thursday that they will be rehiring seven call center employees.
Late last month, 51 call center employees were laid off due to cuts in federal funding .
The DLT announced that additional federal funding has been made available this week, and its Income Support Division will be rehiring seven of the workers who had been laid off.
The federal funding to rehire these workers comes from the UI Modernization Fund. This fund was originally restricted to technological uses, but after negotiation with the U.S Department of Labor, the state has been given approval to use $500,000 toward staffing.
Department Director Charles Fogarty states, "Governor Chafee places a high value on customer service and had asked the department to investigate any and all funding options to bolster staffing at the call center."
The seven employees were rehired due to seniority, and will begin working on Monday, August 20.
