Crews battle fires during blizzard

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) -- Emergency crews were forced to do battle with the elements as well as a pair of house fires during the Blizzard of 2013.

Warwick firefighters were called to 144 Arnold Neck Road for reports of a fire at about 9 p.m. Friday.

The blizzard posed a number of challenges for crews, with reduced visibility and heavy snow covering roads.

Neighbors reported that two people were transported from that scene by ambulance, which had to back down the driveway because it was unable to turn around.

Providence crews responded to a fire in their city at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters there also reported having issues in fighting that fire.

"We encountered a problem with one of the hydrants," said Acting Chief Michael Dillon. "Chief immediately transmitted a second alarm, companies found fire started in the three-story wood frame building, acted quickly to bring the fire under control."

Additional crews were called to the scene, and the flames were eventually contained.

We learned that two firefighters were taken to the hospital from that scene. So far no word on their conditions.
