WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) – A single red rose, a flag, and a hand written note lie at the scene where 19-year-old Army Private Timothy Torres died after his car crashed into a tree.
“He was my baby, I can’t believe he is gone,” said Timothy’s cousin Crystal Seco.
On Monday night around midnight on West Shore Road in Warwick, police say a car heading west with only a driver inside crashed into a tree on the north side of the road.
“He was heading home from New Hampshire, he was just three minutes down the road,” said Crystal.
A nearby resident heard the accident happen.
"I heard this fantastic bang, and then another bang, and I thought somebody hit the house," said Loretta Gough.
Firefighters had to cut the roof off of the car in order to free the victim.
Police say the road was slippery, and the victim was speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.
Authorities are waiting for the results of an autopsy to see if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
