Vote sets up challenge to ACLU lawsuit

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - The Cranston School Committee voted four to three Monday to fight a challenge from the ACLU to remove a controversial prayer banner from Cranston High School West.

The banner has been hanging inside the school for decades.

Last year the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union received a complaint about the prayer being publicly displayed in a public school and demanded that the banner be removed

A subcommittee voted last month in favor of keeping the prayer banner, despite threats of a lawsuit.

The school committee members who voted against keeping the banner said they were concerned about the cost of a potential lawsuit.
