CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- Friends and family gathered in Cranston Sunday for a motorcycle run in honor of a fallen U.S. Marine.

The Corporal Holly Charette Memorial Motorcycle Run kicked off at 10 a.m. in front of the United States Post Office in Cranston that's been named in her honor.  A large crowd was in attendance, including many veterans.

Charette was killed in Fallujah, Iraq, in June 2005 when a suicide bomber attacked her convoy as it returned from a checkpoint.  Charette and several other Marines were killed in the attack; she was the first female Marine to lose her life in operations in Iraq.

Sunday's motorcycle run raised money for the CPL Holly Charette Scholarship fund, which selects students from Cranston East and Coventry High SChool to receive scholarships.

A dinner is also planned for 2 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick.

More information on the Holly Charette Scholarship Fund is available on a website that's been set up in her honor .
