CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- A man that was convicted of stabbing his ex-wife 52 times back in 1990 will remain behind bars.
The parole board denied the parole of Frank Moniz after revisiting his case Monday.
Moniz is serving a life sentence for the murder of 24-year-old Maryellen Medeiros inside of her Pawtucket apartment. This was his second attempt at parole , after his first request was denied seven years ago.
Relatives of Medeiros gathered outside of Harrington Hall to protest his potential release.
"The family is extremely excited, and so pleased the board listened to us," said Katherine Medeiros Lescault. "We broke the silence not only for Maryellen, but for all women who are victims of domestic violence, who are afraid to speak out."
The board considered several factors in their decision, including the seriousness of the crime and letters of opposition from the family and the Attorney General's office.
Moniz will be back up for parole in seven years.
