CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- Police arrested a Providence man Friday morning for trying to enter homes in the city.

Officers were called to New Market Street just after 10 a.m. after a man was spotted walking between houses and trying to open doors.

The suspect took off running, but a sweep of the area led police to a shed on Holburn Street where the man was hiding.

Police arrested Eugene Robinson, 53, of 656 Elmwood Ave. in Providence, following a brief struggle. After he was taken into custody, officers learned he's currently on probation for a previous breaking-and-entering charge.

It was determined that Robinson broke the window and screen of the shed to get in, so he's also been charged with malicious damage to property. He's being held as the investigation continues.
