CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- In the wake of Friday's shooting in Newtown, Conn., an abundance of caution is being taken at schools around Southern New England.

Around 10:40 a.m. Monday, Cranston police conducted a weapons investigation at Cranston High School East, when one student overheard two others possibly discussing guns.

The student immediately sent a text message to a parent, who then alerted school officials.

The school administration worked quickly and sent a a letter to parents saying, "It was reported to the school administration that there was the possibility of a gun located somewhere on campus."

Cranston police said after a thorough investigation, which included K-9's, no weapons were found.

The lockers and backpacks of three 16-year-old students believed to be involved were searched, and the students were questioned by police.

All three were released to their parents.
