CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- A lawyer specializing in DUI cases, who was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk, was found guilty in traffic court Wednesday of refusing a chemical test and having an open container of alcohol while driving.
The traffic tribunal judge suspended Layne Savage's license for nine months. He also ordered Savage to pay fines and perform 40 hours community service.
However, the judge granted a stay on the license suspension, which means Savage will be able to drive while she appeals.
Savage was arrested in Barrington in March. Police said an eyewitness reported seeing her driving erratically, and officers found open liquor bottles in her car.
A district court judge threw out the DUI charge against Savage in May. The judge ruled police did not have reasonable suspicion to stop her, because officers did not witness her driving erratically.
