CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - Unemployed Rhode Island residents are finding it harder to get help from state Department of Labor and Training, and state layoffs there are being blamed.
The Providence Journal reports wait times for those phoning the department's call center have been between 40 and 43 minutes over the past few weeks.
The department lost 67 workers this summer after a cut in federal funds, and Director Charles Fogarty acknowledges that has led to problems meeting the demand for services.
The rise in wait times comes despite a drop in unemployment for the fourth straight month. The Department put the August unemployment rate at 10.7 percent.
