PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Lawmakers from Coventry announced Friday morning that State Police are opening an investigation of the Central Coventry Fire District.
State lawmakers representing Coventry had requested an investigation after the district failed to make proper payments into the pension fund for several months, between Dec. 2011 and Sept. 2012.
"The people of the district as well as the fire personnel deserve an answer as to where that money has gone," said Sen. Nicholas D. Kettle in a news release Friday morning.
"If criminal actions led to the current situation, we need to know," he said.
The fire district filed for receivership back in October due to a $1.6 million budget shortfall -- and is now under control of a special master.
