WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) – Police are looking for the suspect or suspects responsible for setting fire to a concession stand in West Warwick last week.

The concession stand at Riverpoint Park has long been a target of break-ins with vandals.

“The front room was probably half to three quarters destroyed because of the smoke damage and water damage,” said Matt Tyler, President of the West Warwick Girls Softball League.

The concession stand has been broken into about 20 times in the past.

“They take food, equipment, anything with value and we’ve lost every cash register that’s been put in there,” Tyler said.

The field is the only one girls have to play on and the league funds itself.

“From what I understand, the town does have insurance on it and the insurance company did make contact with them, but the town said it was the league’s responsibility,” says Tyler.

Tyler tells Eyewitness News that the concession stand pays for the league costs and umpires and without it the fall ball league likely won’t happen.

“The way it looks right now, if we have to pay for this, there will be no more West Warwick girls softball,” said Tyler.
