Cash strapped schools saving big bucks

Saving thousands of dollars on energy costs

WEST WARWICK, RI (WPRI) - The cash strapped town and school district of West Warwick is saving thousands of dollars in energy costs.

School Property Services Director Ken Townsend tells Eyewitness News that since 2007 he has been upgrading boilers inside the town's schools.

Boilers are Maisie Quinn and John F. Horgan Elementary Schools have received new computerized boilers.

The upgrades have been made through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant.

Boilers at Deering Middle School and West Warwick High School have also been upgraded with computerized boilers as well.

The schools have also switched from using oil to natural gas, which is much cheaper.

At Deering Middle School alone, the projected annual savings is around $90,000.
