WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) - The Pawtuxet River continued to recede Tuesday night , allowing one family in West Warwick to survey the damage to their home.
The Laurence family said they were evacuated from their home in the River Street neighborhood late Sunday night. They returned Tuesday to find three feet of water in their basement. At one point, they said the water from the Pawtuxet was only inches from their front door.
Eyewitness News Chief Meteorologist Tony Petrarca said the Pawtuxet River was three feet above flood stage Tuesday night. It was not expected to drop below flood stage until Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
While the Laurence family checked the damage, they were unable to stay in their home. Officials said it could be weeks before some people would be able to return.
States of emergency remained in effect in West Warwick and Cranston Tuesday night. Governor Carcieri has also declared a state of emergency for areas impacted by flooding.
