WARWICK, R.I. (AP/WPRI) - A Warwick man has been arraigned on charges of spray-painting a swastika and racial slur on the side of a synagogue .

Ryan N. Johnson was arraigned Thursday on a charge of desecrating a public space. He did not enter a plea to that charge, a felony, but pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor vandalism charge.

Police say Johnson, 20,  and a 16-year-old defaced Temple Am David in Warwick with a backwards swastika and a racial slur. The vandalism was discovered June 3.

Investigators do not believe the crime was motivated by hate.
