CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - Cranston police have arrested a suspect accused of stabbing a clerk several times during a convenience store robbery Saturday evening.

Police responded to the Best Way Mart on Atwood Avenue Saturday night just before 6:30 p.m.

Inside officers discovered the store owner had been stabbed several times during an altercation with a robbery suspect. The man then got away with an undisclosed amount of money. The victim was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital but police have not released his name or condition.

Using the store's surveillance system photos the police canvassed the neighborhood searching for suspects.

During their investigation they identified Robert Ruggieri of  Briggs Street as their suspect. Officials say Ruggieri matches the surveillance images captured during the robbery.

Riggieri was taken into police custody without incident. He is now facing multiple felony charges including assault with a dangerous weapon. He will be arraigned Monday morning.
