PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Severe thunderstorms are blamed for thousands of power outages across the area.
There are about 1,036 homes still in the dark, most of those in Providence County.
T.F. Green Airport briefly lost power and passengers' travel plans were upended as the Warwick hub saw more than a dozen flights canceled, delayed or diverted . One U.S. Airways flight to Washington was canceled Thursday, but everything else is running on time.
Lightning struck the electricity panel at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket, forcing the facility to switch to its generator. Power was restored after about 20 minutes.
Heavy rains made it difficult for drivers to maneuver the roadways, especially in Providence on Point Street.
And the clean-up will continue Thursday in communities like Smithfield, where toppled trees dangled from power lines, forcing police to block the street for hours.
At least three people, including a firefighter, were injured in a fire that destroyed a home at the height of Wednesday's storm.
