SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI)- Local firefighters are issuing a warning to residents to stay off of ice.
The warning comes following a failed rescue attempt of a dog stranded on ice in South Kingstown.
Dozens of firefighters risked their lives Tuesday night trying to save two dogs stuck on Barbers Pond.
Sadly, the dog did not survive.
"We got to the dog, we found only one dog at the time, so we're not even positive at this time if there was a second dog", said Kevin Quinn, Deputy Fire Chief of the Union Fire District.
Firefighters say this serves as a reminder that no ice is safe this time of year.
"I think it's critical for us to say this is our third time on the ice with dogs or other animals, the ice is not safe right now", Quinn said.
The Deputy Chief says there has already been three ice rescues so far. All three happened in just the past two weeks.
