NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI)- A world champion and North Kingstown native continues swimming towards Olympic gold.

19-year-old Elizabeth Beisel was back in the pool Tuesday night looking to qualify for another event.

The Rhode Island native didn't qualify in the 400-meter freestyle, but did manage to nearly break an all time American record Monday.

This accomplishment is no surprise to Beisel's father.

"It's the drive she's got. I'm a firm believer there are other kids as good as her swim wise but they don't have her mental drive to excel," Ted Beisel said.

On Monday, Elizabeth qualified for this year's Olympic games in London, finishing with the fastest time in the world.

Beisel says his daughter began swimming when she was 5 years old but he never thought she would be an Olympian.

Olympic trials continue through next Monday.

Beisel says Elizabeth can qualify for up to nine events, but he's not sure how many she will actually try and qualify for.
