HOPKINTON, RI (WPRI/AP)- A West Greenwich man charged with stealing more than $750,000 from a now deceased couple has been acquitted by a Superior Court judge.

The Providence Journal reports that 56-year-old James E. Vieira was acquitted Monday.

He was charged with allegedly stealing from the couple in 2009 while acting under power of attorney.

Prosecutors alleged that Vieira received the life savings of retired Navy Captain Daniel Mooney Jr. and his wife, Barbara, while they couple suffered from cognitive impairment. Vieira allegedly portrayed himself as a financial planner and tax preparer.

A statewide grand jury had previously convicted Vieira of 15 counts of larceny and other crimes in 2009.

The Rhode Island Attorney General's Office claimed that Vieira used some of the money to buy himself artwork and sports memorabilia on EBay.
