WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) -- A man that suffered a fatal stab wound in Westerly Monday afternoon has been identified by police.

Officers tell us Kevin P. Brown, 37, with a last known address of Community Road in South Kingstown, was pronounced dead at Westerly Hospital following the incident.

Police were called to West Street at about 1:43 p.m. after a vehicle had crashed into a tree. Officers found Brown unresponsive inside the vehicle with what appeared to be a stab wound. He was quickly removed from the vehicle and transported to the hospital.

Witnesses told investigators that an altercation took place on nearby Marriott Avenue. Police responded to the area and took in a suspect for questioning.

Mandell W. Tripp, 40, of White Rock Road, Westerly, was charged with second-degree murder and held overnight.

We're told the incident is still under investigation.
