BOSTON (WPRI) -- The IRS says Rhode Islanders affected by Hurricane Sandy may be eligible for tax relief .
President Barack Obama's declaration of federal disaster areas in Newport and Washington Counties means the IRS can postpone certain deadline for taxpayers who own homes or businesses in those counties.
The IRS is also waiving failure-to-deposit penalties due between October 26 and November 26, as long as they are made by November 26.
The IRS applies automatic filing and payment relief to taxpayers living in the disaster area.
Anyone affected by the storm who lives outside Newport or Washington Counties must call the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227 to request tax relief.
