Fed grant to buy flood-prone buildings
$1.1 million going to town of Westerly

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The town of Westerly is receiving more than $1.1 million in federal money to buy eight properties heavily damaged in the 2010 floods.
The office of U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced the grant Wednesday. The town intends to demolish structures on the properties and convert the land to wetlands.
The flood-prone properties are located on Canal Street. Five are residential and three are non-residential.
Reed says the federal dollars will help protect Westerly from future floods while preserving open space.
Westerly has already acquired four acres along the Pawcatuck River, which it intends to use as a waterfront park.
