South Kingstown, R.I. (WPRI) - The town of South Kingstown is working to combat a serious erosion problem at Matunuck beach.
Tropical storm Irene left Matunuck Beach Road just feet short of being breached by Block Island Sound.
On Saturday, residents and town council members met to discuss what needs to done to save precious shoreline.
The town has two proposals awaiting approval from the coastal resources management council to stop the erosion.
The first is to install a 200-foot section of a sheet pile wall along Matunuck Beach Road.
The town has also applied for a reclassification of approximately 1370 feet of beachfront.
The move would allow property owners to have manmade structures designed and built to protect their property from further erosion, something they are not allowed to do now.
The town is hoping to get their proposals approved soon and have the new sea wall built this spring, ahead of the busy summer season.
