SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - Hundreds of athletes descended on the University of Rhode Island's Kingston campus Saturday, taking part in the Special Olympics Rhode Island State Summer Games.

By Sunday, the three-day event will have drawn nearly 1,500 athletes, 500 coaches, 1,000 volunteers and 4,000 family members to the campus.

The wet weather did affect some competitions, canceling soccer and cycling trials.

Meanwhile, track and field and swimming events held indoors went off without a hitch.

The Annual Torch Run kicked off the summer games Friday night, which started in Woonsocket, stopped off at the State House in Providence, and ended up at URI.

The State Summer Games features competition in Athletics, Aquatics, Bowling, Cycling, MATP, Powerlifting and Unified Soccer.
