SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - Rhode Island took a big step this week toward becoming a national leader in cybersecurity.

Congressman Jim Langevin announced Tuesday that the University of Rhode Island was awarded a $500,000 federal grant to help create new technology to educate local students about protecting computer networks.

The program is intended to get high school and college students excited about careers in cyber security, and to help develop a qualified workforce in the rapidly-growing cybersecurity industry.

“No matter how we act to strengthen network security policies, we cannot have effective cybersecurity without a highly skilled workforce, and right now there is a significant shortage of qualified professionals,” said Langevin in a statement.

Rep. Langevin is a co-founder of the Congressional Cybersecurity Caucus.

The grant comes from the National Science Foundation.
