SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) -- Military officials say a Rhode Island soldier died Wednesday at Fort Hood, Texas.

According to a news release from the base, 38 year-old Sergeant 1st Class Brian John Peckham was found unresponsive in his on-base home Wednesday morning.  He was pronounced dead a short time later in a hospital.

Peckham, from West Kingston, joined the Army in 1995 as a combat engineer.  Since 2011 he has been posted to Fort Hood, most recently with HHC, 8th Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade.

SFC Peckham is a veteran of three overseas deployments and has received several awards and decorations, including two Bronze Stars.

The circumstances of Peckham's death are under investigation.
