HOPKINTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- State Police are investigating a serious crash on I-95 in Hopkinton.
Troopers were called to the scene on the northbound side of the highway at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
State Police Lieutenant Eric Lariviere tells Eyewitness News that the crash happened in the area of Exit 1. The vehicle was travelling at a "very high rate of speed" when it veered right off the road and struck a tree. That impact spun the vehicle around backwards, and it struck another group of trees.
The male driver was the only occupant and was ejected from the vehicle.
Lariviere said the man was taken first to Westerly Hospital and then Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of serious but non life-threatening injuries.
The crash remains under investigation but Troopers do not believe any other vehicles were involved in the crash, or that alcohol was a factor.
