NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) -- A historic bridge in Rhode Island is about to get a long-awaited facelift.
State officials last week announced plans to repair the Hussey Bridge in Wickford. The work will involve upgrades to the bridge's deck, sidewalks, arches and railings -- and a fresh coat of paint.
The project is now in the design phase and work isn't expected to begin for at least a year. Because of the nearly 90-year-old bridge's historic status, the work must be approved by historic preservation officials.
Local leaders have pushed for years to repair the bridge. A repair project was announced more than a decade ago, but the work was repeatedly delayed.
North Kingstown Democratic Sen. James Sheehan says the distinctive arched bridge plays a vital role in the local economy.
