CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) -- A South Kingstown man is facing a summons in connection with a two-car crash that sent a woman to the hospital with serious injuries Friday morning.

Police on scene said William Thompson, 66, ran a red light around 5 a.m. at the corner of Route 1 and Wildflower Rd. in Charlestown, which is right near The Hitching Post Restaurant, and crashed into a car driven by Melissa Verrecchia, 42, of Coventry.

Verrecchia was seriously injured in the crash. LifeStar Air Ambulance flew her to Rhode Island Hospital's Trauma Center, where she was listed in critical condition as of Friday afternoon.

Police said Thompson, who was not seriously hurt in the crash, faces a traffic summons for running the red light.
