NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Plans to dredge the Port of Davisville at Quonset Point for the first time in several decades are moving ahead.
Officials say the $7.5 million project could begin as early as October.
State lawmakers and Gov. Lincoln Chafee approved the work earlier this year saying it will allow ships to more easily access the port. The area around the port has not been dredged since the 1940s.
The Rhode Island Economic Development Corp. approved $7.5 million in bonds to pay for the dredging.
The bonds will be repaid with revenue from the port, which is one of the nation's largest handlers of imported automobiles. About 150,000 cars are brought to the port by ship every year.
The port supports more than 1,100 jobs.
