NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) -- Rhode Islanders are getting a chance to try out the state's expanded commuter rail service for free.

On Thursday, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced the start of "Wickford Wintertime Wednesdays," an initiative that will offer free round-trip train tickets from the new Wickford Junction train station to Providence every Wednesday from January 23 to February 27.

Commuters who take advantage of "Wickford Wintertime Wednesday" can also park for free at Wickford Junction.

Normally, a round-trip ticket from Wickford to Providence costs $6.50 and parking costs $4 a day.

Anyone interested in receiving a free ride should download a registration form from the Wickford Junction website, and bring it to the registration table on the second-floor waiting area.
