WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) - New traffic signal technology is on its way to the town of Westerly.
Tomorrow, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation will activate a yellow arrow traffic signal at the intersection of Langworthy Road and Route 1.
The traffic light improvement will aid drivers making left turns from Langworthy Road.
The upgrade was made possible by a $2.5 million resurfacing project for both this intersection and Dunn's Corner Road.
The department tells Eyewitness News this is the second such traffic light to be installed in the state, and is part of a larger effort to make similar traffic light changes in other communities.
National studies have found flashing yellow arrow signals increase driver safety at intersections, reducing the number of crashes compared with traditional lights.
