SOMERSET, Mass. (WPRI) - Rhode Island Fast Ferry is adding a new vessel to expand ferry service to Martha's Vineyard this summer.
The "Ava Pearl" is currently being built at Gladding Hearn Shipyard in Somerset, Massachusetts.
The ferry will provide service to Martha's Vineyard from Quonset Point in North Kingstown. It will also be used for sightseeing cruises on Narragansett Bay.
The newly constructed ferry will replace an older ferry using state-of-the-art technology and includes flat screen televisions on board.
The vessel was built at a cost of $6 million.
"We are excited to be on the cutting edge of the fast ferry technology, we will be celebrating our tenth season and all our passengers will truly be benefiting from our success," said Rhode Island Fast Ferry President Charles A. Donadio Jr.
The Ava Pearl is slated to be put into service next month.
