NARRAGANSETT, RI (WPRI) - A Massachusetts man is missing in the waters off Narragansett, after officials said he jumped in to save three people swept off the rocks by a wave.
The victim, identified by family members as 25-year-old Samnang Nou of Lowell, had driven to Narragansett to go fishing with relatives.
According to officials, the group was fishing on Hazard Rock when a large wave struck, knocking three people into the water. Nou jumped in to help, but quickly went under.
People nearby were able to rescue the three victims who were swept in first. They were taken to South County Hospital.
Several boats and a Coast Guard helicopter searched the area for hours, but could not find Nou. Officials said he was presumed drowned.
The search is now being called a recovery effort, and will resume Monday morning at 7:00 a.m.
