NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) - A local man is safe after being rescued from his burning boat on Narragansett Bay.
The man was on his 38-foot cigarette boat Thursday when it caught fire off Black Point, near Scarborough State Beach in Narragansett.
According to the Coast Guard, the boater called 911 about 4 p.m. and a good samaritan from the vessel "Tiger 5" came to his rescue and pulled the man from the water.
Eyewitness News viewers alerted us to the fire and sent in pictures via the My Report function of the WPRI.com app for smartphones.
"The flames were intense," said eyewitness Tom Treleaven. "I'm surprised the boat didn't sink right away as bad as it was."
In fact, soon after rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Point Judith and Castle Hill arrived on scene, the boat did indeed sink.
The Coast Guard said it sent out an alert to other boaters about the location of the sunken vessel.
An investigation is continuing into the fire.
This incident comes just a few days after two other boat rescues. A fisherman was rescued early Tuesday morning after his boat sank. And Monday, eight people were rescued from a burning yacht in Newport Harbor, right near Goat Island.
